The trend of science and technology is changing rapidly.
Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest memory chip manufacturer, has officially confirmed the end-of-life (EOL) for its LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X low-power DRAM products, marking a pivotal shift in the global mobile memory market as the industry accelerates towards next-generation solutions to meet exploding AI demand.
Effective April 17, 2026, Samsung ceased accepting all new orders and additional volume requests for LPDDR4/4X components. The company will fulfill existing purchase agreements throughout the remainder of 2026, with final production runs scheduled to conclude by December 31, 2026. By the first quarter of 2027, all relevant manufacturing lines will be fully converted to produce higher-margin products, primarily LPDDR5, LPDDR5X, and HBM (High-Bandwidth Memory) for AI servers and advanced mobile applications.
The decision to retire LPDDR4/4X, which have been the mainstream mobile memory solutions for nearly a decade, stems from a strategic reallocation of Samsung’s finite wafer capacity. Driven by the unprecedented global AI boom, the demand for advanced memory technologies has surged, creating a supply-demand imbalance. LPDDR4/4X, while mature, offer significantly lower profit margins compared to the cutting-edge LPDDR5 series and HBM.
The discontinuation by Samsung, a dominant supplier, is sending ripples through the global supply chain:
For buyers and engineers sourcing components, this EOL announcement presents a critical window of opportunity:
As the semiconductor industry undergoes its most profound transformation in a decade, driven by AI, Samsung’s move underscores the irreversible shift towards high-performance memory solutions. The era of LPDDR4 is drawing to a close, and the future belongs to the memory technologies powering the next wave of intelligent, connected devices.
