On September 22nd, it was reported that Samsung Electronics, the South Korean tech giant, had successfully passed NVIDIA’s certification test for its 12-layer HBM3E chip product. This news drove Samsung’s share price to rise by as much as 5% to 83,400 won in the morning session, hitting a new high in the past year.

Previously, Samsung had already supplied HBM3E products to AMD and Broadcom, but had always failed to pass NVIDIA’s certification test. It is known that NVIDIA requires suppliers to achieve an HBM data transmission speed of over 10 gigabits per second, which is much higher than the current industry standard of 8Gbps. After passing the certification, Samsung will become the third supplier of NVIDIA’s HBM chips. SK Hynix has already started large-scale mass production and is supplying HBM chips to NVIDIA, and Micron Technology is also following closely behind. However, SK Hynix is currently still in the leading position. Last week, the company announced that it had completed the development of the HBM4 chip.

Analysts believe that with the continuous development of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloud computing, the demand for advanced semiconductors continues to grow. As a key component for high-performance computing, HBM chips have a broad market prospect. The fact that Samsung’s HBM3E chips have passed NVIDIA’s certification will further intensify the competition in the HBM chip market and may also have an impact on the market pricing of HBM.
